Whetstone to Barnet for chaat and street classics

Whetstone sits on the same road as us. Drive north up the Great North Road (A1000) for about 2.5 miles and you arrive on Barnet High Street, with two car parks around the restaurant. If you would rather leave the car, Totteridge & Whetstone station is one stop from High Barnet on the Northern line, and the walk from the station to our door takes about 10 minutes.

Street food suits a casual evening plate as well as a big meal. A round of pani puri and a palak patta chaat, crisp spinach in a light batter with yoghurt and chutney, makes a good start. Vada pav, the spiced potato bun that Mumbai runs on, is filling without being heavy. If you want something to hold, a chicken or paneer kathi roll wraps tandoor-cooked filling in a flaky paratha. Mixed pakoras and masala fries round out the table, and a mango lassi cools everything down.

After work, we open from 17:30 to 22:30 on Monday and Wednesday to Friday; lunch runs 12:00 to 15:00 on those days. Saturday is noon to 23:00 and Sunday noon to 22:00, and we close on Tuesdays. Can't make it up the road? Delivery to Whetstone may be available on Uber Eats or Deliveroo, so check the app for your address, or order ahead and collect from the restaurant on your way home.

Questions from Whetstone

How do I get to Chit Chaat from Whetstone?

Drive about 2.5 miles north on the Great North Road (A1000) to Barnet High Street, where there are two car parks near us. Or take the Northern line one stop from Totteridge & Whetstone to High Barnet and walk around 10 minutes to 135 High Street.

Do you deliver Indian street food to Whetstone?

We deliver through Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Whether your Whetstone address is covered depends on the app, so enter your postcode to check. You can also order ahead and collect from the restaurant. Rolls, vada pav and pav bhaji travel better than delicate chaats like pani puri.

What is a kathi roll?

A kathi roll is a classic Indian street wrap: tandoor-cooked chicken or paneer, onions and chutney rolled inside a flaky paratha. It is easy to eat with your hands and filling enough for a light meal. We serve both chicken and paneer versions on our chef's specials.

What drinks go well with chaat?

Something cool and tangy works best. Masala chaas is a spiced buttermilk, shikanji is a salty-sweet lemon drink and aam panna is made from raw mango. Mango lassi and rose and cardamom lassi are creamier. We also stock Thums Up and Limca, and there is a cocktail bar.
